Evritania is a top tourist destination that offers holidays throughout the year. The highlights of the region, however, are reflected to the visitor in the winter, as the snowy landscape imposes many alternative choices of outdoor sports. Skiing in the ski resort of Karpenisi, rafting in Acheloos, Tavropos and Trikerioti, riding in the valley of Karpenisioti, but also jeep safari in the trackless forests, offer a different understanding of nature.
The only thing that the visitor has to do is to select the appropriate hotel. The traditional guesthouse "Amadryades" is a first class option. It is at the edge of the picturesque village of Voutyro, 10 km from Karpenisi and in 820 m height. In its spacious and tasteful rooms one can feel the sense of hospitality, a good taste of which can be found at the rich traditional breakfast and the delicious guesthouse pastries. Among the to-dos here, is the visit to the church of Saint Paraskevi, the biggest stone byzantine church in Evritania.
In the center of Roumeli, among tall fir trees, is the green land of Evrytania -occupied area about 2047 sq.km. In the sweet wildness of the nature, Evrytania is suitable for mountain tourism friends who want to have the opportunity to learn the unique paths of the wild beauty.
In general, the county offers many outdoor activities, from mountaineering trips, mountain ascents, descents of rivers, to hunting and above all rest. According to a survey of the committee of UNESCO, 1991, the county of Evrytania is considered one of the top five regions of the world in clean environment with zero pollution. The climate of the county is what we learned from school as a continental and healthy. So anyone who can steal a few days for winter holidays, is strongly recommended to visit this beautiful province.
The path to Evritania itself is excellent. Starting from Lamia and passing from the valley of Sperchios and the Fthiotiko plains, leaving behind beautiful graphic villages, as Makrakomi, St. George, you reach the village Tymfristos. Then, onwards the landscape is unique and the continuous climbing shows an unexpected result. Whereas the entrance of the village may not have any snow, coming out from it, everything is possible around you to be white. Further, we enter in a dense fir forest, which if it covered in snow, it is pure magic.
After the dense fir forest, we reach Rachi, where Evritania welcomes you with all her glory.
From there, our destination is the beautiful Karpenisi, the capital of the the prefecture. Starting the descent of Rachi to Karpenisi, you will meet one of the most beautiful villages of the prefecture, Agios Nikolaos, or "Laspi", as you would likely have heard calling it. This village is immersed among chestnut and fir trees and to create a unique landscape. If the trip is made in the spring and then, you will be certainly impressed by the vermillion roofs of the houses that create a wonderful contrast to the rich green that surround them. After a few kilometers you will arrive at the beautiful and famous Karpenisi.
As your first stop there, we encourage you to be the central square of the city to drink from the crystal water of a lion tap and relax under the large old plane tree. The capital of the prefecture is located in the foothills of Velouchi Mountain. Tradition says that when it was built, the residents in the winter hung a piece of meat in three trees at different locations in the region. Where the climate was milder and the meat altered more quickly, it felt as the most suitable place for installation. How right they were shows today, because upon arriving in the square, you feel in another place, since the north wind and frozen breeze of the snow are cut the weather sweetens sharply. In Karpenisi, you can build a small «HQ» and from there you can start the exploration of the Evrytania nature. Thus, to obtain a full picture of the landscape of Evritania, you should make a little escape from the limits of the capital of the prefecture. We suggest some routes which would remain unforgettable.
This is the most classic route, which starts from Karpenisi and through many beautiful villages, leads to the monastery of Prousos. No visit in Evritania worths if you do not see the monastery of Prousos, a place of pilgrimage that attracts believers from all over central and southern Greece, especially in the Aug. 23 when it is celebrating. To go to Prousos, we get in the way of the river, where for the most part , the path is right next to the river Karpenisioti. We believe that the area was rightfuly declared "Tempi of Evritania". On our way, we will find the traditional villages Voutyrou and Koryschades with a rich historical background. In Voutyrou you can find the greatest church of the county, which is worth visiting.
Continuing the journey, we reach the intersection of Mikro Chorio and Megalo Chorio. These are the two famous tourist villages in the prefecture, with a great history, smothered in green, with all the amenities for the visitor. From the Mikro Chorio you can go to the Palaio Mikro Chorio, where in the spring months a beautiful pond is formed.
Leaving the picturesque villages and continuing to Prousos, we pass from the Klidi, a wild canyon that will flood your senses with a wild awe. After a few kilometers we arrive at the monastery of Prousos, where you will be impressed. Do not forget to ask and learn about the history of the monastery and the miraculous image of the Virgin Mary. There is a museum in the monastery with many exhibits of the Greek revolution. The Prousos is worth to see the towers of Karaiskakis and the Black Cave located on the opposite side of the village and is about half an hour walk from the road, in a path with running waters, lakes and green environment.
One more village of Evritania that its name remains a mystery...
In Evrytania, it is difficult for someone to decipher the name of some villages due to the local idioms. So, it is common for one place to have two, even three names. A good example is the Fourna village. There was said that there was a baker there (fournaris in greek). So the locals said that they'll go "to the baker", but the last letter comfused the outlanders as it seemed the name to be neutral or female gender.
Likewise, with Chryso, the Krenti and the Voutyrou locale. The latter derived from the assumption that a woman who made and sold butter(=voutyro in greek) lived there. Yet, the term "Voutyrou" as a word alone is completely wrong in greek.
In any case, however, it is not the name that will be left to the visitor but the beauty and hospitality offered. It is a classic Evritania village with very few residents, yet excellent tourist services and many traditional taverns and rooms-to-let giving truly endless hours of enjoyment to whoever chooses this place. At Voutyrou, you can find the largest church in the county, a magnificent byzantine style in an apotheosis of the surrounding green. Gurgling water from the beautiful tap, substantial, springs from the depths of the land to cool the thirsty visitor. It has nice traditional houses. The land has rich livestock production and many who immigrated abroad, always remembering their heritage.
