At the mountainous and semi-mountainous: Hedgehog, Hare, Squirrel, Snow-mouse, Wolf, Fox, Ferret, Weasel, Otter, Wild goat, Wild boar, Deer, Wild cat and many more.
Some information:
The wolf, according to the Red Book of the Endangered Species in Greece is considered endangered and classified as "vulnerable".
It is the largest species of the Canidae family in Greece. It lives mainly in the semi-mountainous and mountainous areas of the Central and Northern Greece. The wolf prefers large and dense forests, but you can find wolves in lowland areas adjacent to forests. It feeds on ungulates, small mammals and carrion.
It lives in family groups, which during winter unite and form herds of 10-15 members. The wolf is treated hostily by farmers, because of the losses it causes to livestock.
The southern border of its inhabitat is considered Evritania in Greece and it is one of the southest in Europe. It is included in the appendix II of the guidance 92/43/EEC
The deer prefers sparse broadleaf forests, as well as mixed ones with several gaps. Particularly preferred are the edges of forests, while it avoids the dense coniferous forests. It lives at daytime and in small family groups. It is monogamous and the spawning season begins in June and lasts until August. In our country the deer is classified as "vulnerable" under the red book and it is protected. The main marauder is the wolf and in several areas the deer is threatened by poaching.
It lives in a wide variety of habitats. In our country, the distribution is limited to semi-mountainous and mountainous area. Prefers oak forests, chestnut and beech, and agricultural crops adjacent to woodland. At high altitude it leaves up to the forest line. It is social and lives in family groups. It is a polygamous species and the reproductive period starts in December. Its main enemy is the wolf, while in some areas its illegal hunting is responsible for the decline in population.
You can find it in the Northern and Southern Pindos, the Central Greece, Olympus and Rodopi. It lives in large altitudes and prefers coniferous and broadleaf forests with steep cliffs. Its nutrition varies seasonally. It lives at day and establishes small herds. It is polygamous and its spawning period begins in November and breeds 1-2. The Wild goat is included in the Red Book of the Endangered Species in Greece and is classified as "Rare", therefore, its hunting is forbidden.
It is a woodlander species. The wild cat prefers large and dense forests far from human activities. It feeds with small mammals, especially rodents, rabbits and birds. It is nocturnal and nests in trees or rocks cavity. It is monogamous and its breeding period begins in February and gives birth to 2-4 young. It is included in the Red Book of the Endangered Species in Greece and is classified as "Endangered".
It is a social species and is found in streams, ponds and members. The reproduction period lasts almost all the summer months. The southern border of its inhabitat in the Balkans is considered the Krikelopotamos in Evritania. It is included in the appendix II of the guidance 92/43/EEC.
The Pantavrechi Canyon was formed by the Krikelopotamos strong waters and you can find it in Roska Village of Domnitsa. It is just the shortest path of the river between Platanaki and Kaliakouda Mountains. Its length is no more than 100 meters but the sight is regretably breathtaking.
The life diversity is impressive and yet not fully explored. Springs from the surrounding mountains that meet the Krikelopotamos river pour here forming a landscape that is always raining (panta vrechi in greek)! Even the rocks are green and the waters form water curtains and small lakes of a meter depth.
The Vinianis Canyon commences from a dirt road which unites the Old and Nea Viniani Villages and leads to Tavropos, just before the arched Vinianis bridge which connected the Village with Karpenisi. Planes cover the whole canyon. There are ald watermills which served the Old Viniani. It has 3 small waterfalls, the biggest of themis 30 meter height.
The Black Cave Canyon is outside Prousos, in the military bridge of Kastania. In the beginning of the path, there is a beautiful stone water tap. Following the narrow path, you will reach the wooden bridge and the 10 m waterfall which forms a natural pool with ice cold water and another one later on. You can swim if you like under the falls and you can find rappels to help you go down the falls.
The route ends to the Black Cave, the hideout of the citizens during the Turkish occupation and other unpleasant eras, where we find a stone construction of 30 m wide as its entrance.
